Flow-Induced Deformation and Desorption of Adsorbed Polymers

چکیده
The influence of shear flow of solvent past poly(methyl methacrylate) chains adsorbed onto germanium oxide from dilute carbon tetrachloride solution (a near-θ solvent) was studied at shear rates from 0 to 4 × 104 s-1 with the new apparatus described in this paper. Both the adsorbed amount and the flow-induced surface orientation (surface dichroism) were measured. The method involved measurements of infrared spectroscopy in attenuated total reflection (FTIR-ATR) using a hemispherical ATR crystal whose position with respect to the incident infrared source was rotated by 90° during the experiment in order to measure infrared absorbance in orthogonal directions. shear flow appeared to flatten the adsorbed PMMA layer relative to the surface. However, alignment of the polymer orientation in the direction of flow was found to be small. This suggests that shear-induced desorption (controlled by stress) and relaxation in response to deformation within the adsorbed layer (controlled by time) may be largely independent.

Nonlinear Rheology of Unentangled Polymer Melts Reinforced with High Concentration of Rigid Nanoparticles
A scaling model is presented to analyze the nonlinear rheology of unentangled polymer melts filled with high concentration of small spherical particles. Assuming the majority of chains to be reversibly adsorbed to the surface of the particles, we show that the emergence of nonlinearity in the viscoelastic response of the composite system subjected to a 2D shear flow results from stretching of t...

متن کاملAdsorption-induced deformation of mesoporous solids.
The Derjaguin-Broekhoff-de Boer theory of capillary condensation is employed to describe deformation of mesoporous solids in the course of adsorption-desorption hysteretic cycles. We suggest a thermodynamic model, which relates the mechanical stress induced by the adsorbed phase to the adsorption isotherm. Analytical expressions are derived for the dependence of the solvation pressure on the va...
متن کاملMotion of Adsorbed Nano-Particles on Azobenzene Containing Polymer Films.
We demonstrate in situ recorded motion of nano-objects adsorbed on a photosensitive polymer film. The motion is induced by a mass transport of the underlying photoresponsive polymer material occurring during irradiation with interference pattern. The polymer film contains azobenzene molecules that undergo reversible photoisomerization reaction from trans- to cis-conformation. Through a multi-sc...
متن کاملQuantitative analysis of thermo-mechanical behavior in 414 stainless steel using flow curves and processing maps
The hot deformation behavior of a typical martensitic stainless steel containing 2.1% Ni was investigated by means of the compression test in the strain rate range of 0.001-1 s-1 and temperature range of 950-1150 °C. The flow behavior of the steel was evaluated using the flow stress curves and flow softening map and by microstructural investigation. Taking into account of the strain effect on t...
